Abnormality Biography
Abnormality began in late 2005 when Mallika (vocals) joined Massachusetts death metal band Teratism on stage for a live rendition of Sepultura’s “Desperate Cry.” So impressed by Mallika’s raw ability, Jay (drums) and Michael (lead guitar/vocals) of Teratism decided they could not let her talent go to waste and immediately started a side-project that quickly became their main focus. Shortly thereafter, Jeremy joined on rhythm guitar and the core lineup was complete. The following year was spent between intensive periods of writing and well-received live performances across New England. With members hailing from such acts as Goratory, Ascendancy and Iranach, their collective experience pooled together to form a strong live act, working to earn respect within the underground metal scene, and along the way have shared a stage with the likes of Dying Fetus, Skinless, Malignancy, Circle of Dead Children and Mortal Decay among many others. In May of 2007 Abnormality released its first demo, entitled simple 2007 Demo, a minimal-fills, nearly void of art, let the music speak for itself, straight to the point slab of extreme metal. Completely self-produced, engineered and financed, it was met with strong critic and fan response in its limited release. Two thousand eight has shaped up to be another significant year for Abnormality, currently underway on production of its first full-length album, once again being produced and engineered by the band. It will consist of re-recorded versions of the three songs from the 2007 Demo as well as eight brand new original songs, all with much-improved sonics. Meanwhile, a track from the 2007 Demo has been included in Harmonix’s Rock Band 2, the music video game released in September 2008. Abnormality makes a conscious effort to put its music first and not be restricted by genres or labels, unafraid to show its members’ diverse influences yet unwilling to be limited by them. Pulling favorite elements from grind, death, black, progressive and heavy metal, as well as subtleties from rock, blues, jazz and a multitude of other styles, Abnormality’s commitment to forward thinking music could not be more evident than in the range of dynamics and structures of its songs. With twisting complexities ranging from weaving, fast progressions to heavy grooves, Abnormality has allowed its music and songwriting to evolve and take on a life of its own. The results have been a mix of intricate, epic and aggressive concepts, often underlined by ideas both subtly absurd and tongue-in-cheek, taking surprising twists and turns but never relenting. Abnormality continues to push its musical dynamics and will be focusing on promoting the full-length upon its release, as well as constantly writing new material. Abnormality will strive to continue to evolve, and are primed to have an impact and leave a large, unsightly mark on a scene in need of fresh blood, new ideas and more distinct, unique metal.
