Betty Curse Biography
Betty Curse is a pseudonym for Megan Burns (born 25 June 1986), a British musician and former award-winning actress from Liverpool, England. In the 90's she was part of an unsuccessful girl pop group. She played Hannah in the feature film 28 Days Later (2002) and won the Marcello Mastroianni award at the Venice film festival for her performance in Liam (2000). She has since embarked upon a music career, under the pseudonym that her record label gave to her "Betty Curse", they have given her a "goth" image to work with. She her music is catered to a younger crowd and is described as "goth pop". She is currently touring the UK, and played the 2006 Download Festival. On 13th November 2006, Island Records released a brand new single from BETTY CURSE. Entitled "Girl With Yellow Hair", the single was written by Betty with Davey McManus, frontman and founder of The Crimea. Girl With Yellow Hair has proved one of the stand out tracks from her live set, and the single release follows that of her highly anticipated debut album Hear Lies Betty Curse, which was released exclusively on the eve of Halloween 2006, through online retailers. The commercial CD release of the album follows in January 2007. After receiving great reviews for her very first festival appearance, a storming set at Download 2006 in June 2006, and various headline club nights, Betty hit the road in October, finishing at London Camden Underworld on November 5th 2006. Following a Goth revival in the Summer of 2006, which saw Jean Paul Gaultier dedicate his new collection to the look, Dita Von Teese cross into the mainstream with Vogue and Elle shoots, The Horrors on the cover of the NME and Siousxie Sioux with a brand new record deal, Betty Curse received a rush of attention. Having starred in the biggest zombie film of the past two decades, 28 Days Later, and with music which managed to sound like sweetlace power pop whilst lyrically delving into the darkest psyche of your typical teenage outcast, her credentials couldn't be higher to claim her place as the female figurehead for a new generation of Goth pop fans. Betty has seen her popularity grow with organic word-of-mouth support since her launch. Yahoo named her 'Emerging Artist Of The Month' for August 2006, enjoying across site promotion, video showings and a live performance on what is the UK's most popular music video site. Kerrang Radio playlisted her last single, the download release of "God This Hurts", on their daytime schedule. Kerrang TV and MTV 2 picked up on her very first video, for the track "Excuse All The Blood". Online, NME.com and Kerrang.com have given exclusives to her previous two videos, and Myspace.com put her on their front page as one of their Features Artists. Her debut album Hear Lies Betty Curse features new single "Girl With Yellow Hair", along with previously released tracks "God This Hurts", "Met On The Internet" and "Excuse All The Blood". Totaling 12 tracks in all on the download release, the CD release (out Jan) will feature a bonus track. The majority of the album was written by Betty and Steve Ludwin, former frontman with Little Hell, with The Vaselines' Eugene Kelly co-writing the track "Stay Out Of My Way". She has sinced been dropped from Island Records. "The Betty Curse sound is anthemic alt-rock/power pop in the vein of The Runaways, Blondie, The Go-Gos. Dark and sweet, like black cherry bubblegum."
