From 1970s thru the present, the Mandarin pop music scence is based in Taiwan. Most popular Mandarin pop singers are originally from Taiwan or go to Taiwan (from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the U.S.) to develop their careers. But back 50 years ago, there were not much Taiwan pop music. Then there was a movement "Sing our own songs" (Using our own language, making our own music) in 1970s，basically in universities in Taiwan, and this genre of music was called "School campus song", became very popular in mainland China during the late 1990s and 2000s with the increased cultural exchanges between Taiwan and China during this period. Besides, a place where freedom of speech is supported is a better place for artists. After all, censorship is bad for creativity, isn't it?
