Darius Brooks Biography
. After placing such treasures in gospel music history as “Safe in His Arms,” “My Mind’s Made Up,” “For The Good of Them,” “If I Be Lifted” and many others. He has returned with his best yet - MY SOUL, an outpouring of his life experiences to melodies. 2006 proved to be a great year for Brooks and his latest project. Jet Magazine featured him “In the Spotlight” (July 3rd). Among rave reviews and numerous television appearances he garnered two final round Stellar Gospel Music Award nominations for My Soul; “CD of the Year” and “Recorded Music Packaging of the Year”. My Soul also found a home on the Billboard Charts for 20 weeks. Darius has pulled out all the stops and created an eclectic mixture on this project that appeals to a wide range of listeners. The hard-hitting “Put Your Hands Up” can go undetected on R&B/ Hip Hop stations around the globe, but the commanding message of adoration to GOD sets it apart. MY SOUL also includes “Survivor,” written in response to the recent tragedies our nation has faced, as well as, modern updates of classics such as “My Soul”, originally recorded by Donnie Hathaway (Thank You Master for My Soul, 1970). He found it befitting to include within the nine remaining tracks a few songs near and dear to his heart from his 18 years with the late Reverend Milton Brunson’s famed “Tommies”, (“Lord I Believe” and “Thank You”) to bring him full circle. This musical journey is sure to inspire, uplift and encourage the hearts of listeners, a project the entire family can enjoy. “Trust You More” a ballad from MY SOUL speaks to God’s faithfulness. “In the many circumstances, situations and tests in our lives we can become blinded by what’s happening in that moment. But GOD said He would never leave us nor forsake us and if we take a moment to look over our lives He has been there, He has been true and faithful even we were not, by grace we have made it thus far. This song is meant to inspire us all as believers to remember who GOD really is and Trust Him – for real” says Brooks. Darius Brooks, a man who has been one of Gospel’s greatest driving; creative forces may not be recognized by his name alone but by his unprecedented gift. He has been behind the scenes of some of gospel’s biggest songs and stars. For the last two decades, Darius has thrived in almost every musical capacity imaginable from songwriter, singer and accompanist, to arranger and producer for a host of Gospel luminaries that includes Shirley Caesar, Vickie Winans, the late Rev. Milton Brunson and the Thompson Community Singers, and Ricky Dillard, jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, as well as, R&B icons Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and current chart-topper Avant, to name but a few. Grammy, Stellar and Dove Awards are among the many accolades he has received, and yet, with a resumé already to his credit that most artists can only dream of, Brooks is just getting started. The widespread affection for his 2004 release “Your Will” accelerated Darius’ career with numerous television appearances, including his performance and nomination at the 19th Annual Stellar Awards. Don Jackson, CEO, Chairman of Central City Productions had this to say, “My decision to have him perform on the Stellar Awards was right on target because the biggest response we received from that show was in reference to Darius’ great performance and stage presence.” BET, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Inspiration Network, and TV One are among the other outlets where Brooks continues to be seen. When he’s not in the studio he has an active touring schedule that has included: Billboard/AURN’s R&B Hip Hop Conference, T.D. Jakes Megafest, Gospel Music Workshop of America and a 23-city tour with platinum selling artist, Fred Hammond. His international reach extends to Great Britain, Scandinavia, Italy, South Africa and Germany who are currently playing his music. For this project he became more than just an artist. He took on many roles, serving as songwriter and producer, as well as, sitting at the helm of his own label JMG (Journey Music Group). My Soul, predominantly recorded at DebDash Recording Studio (named after his wife Deborah and two-year-old daughter Dasha) will be released on JMG and distributed by KOCH Entertainment, the leading and fastest-growing independent music and video company in the U.S. A true renaissance man, Darius, his wife Deborah and their daughter make their home in Chicago where he serves as musical director for Reverend Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition and he also mentors vocalists and musicians through his SDM Foundation. Now moving to the next level in his life, Brooks says “I look at my life as a song that I’m writing. Everyday I add another line, another instrument, possibly a new tempo. I can honestly say I have a better understanding of my past and I am enjoying writing the lyrics of my life.”
