Grass Roots Biography
The Grass Roots aka simply Grass Roots, were a hugely successful pop rock group that despite charting 29 Top 100 singles from 1967 to 1972 and being on the Billboard charts an astounding 307 straight weeks during that time, never quite had a number 1 single. Their music, largely a product of top production and songwriting talents of the era, remains a staple of 60's & 70's oldies radio stations, and many movie soundtracks. The initial creation of writing and production team Steve Barri and P.F. Sloan of Lou Adler's Dunhill/ABC records, a group was selected by the LA based production team at an open audition in San Francisco. A group of suburban teenagers called The Bedouins were selected. and then another band called The 13th Floor had to be hired when one of their members left to play with Gene Clark. The legal rights to the name The Grass Roots was purchased from Arthur Lee of Love, who had also performed under this moniker. Soon the project was having great success on the radio including 1967's #8 hit Let’s Live For Today and 1968's #5 chart hit Midnight Confessions. More problems ensued when PF Sloan left the Dunhill writing team, and a new lineup shift occured in 1969 when guitarist Creed Bratton left to become an actor ( he's now seen on NBC's The Office). With new writers, the group scored chart action once again in 70-71 with Baby Hold On and Temptation Eyes as well as Sooner Or Later and Two Divided By Love all produced by founder Barri. The lineup shifted several times, and the hits stopped coming, but Rob Grill has remained running various revamped live versions of the group since the 70's. http://www.the-grassroots.com
