Gyuto Monks of Tibet Biography
Gyuto Monks of Tibet are a Grammy Award winning (2010) chanting group. The Gyuto Order (also spelled Gyütö or Gyüto) of Buddhist monks is a Tibetan tantric order founded in 1475 by Jetsun Kunga Dhondup within the Tibetan school of Gelug. The Gyuto monastery is one of the main tantric colleges of the Gelug tradition. Often, monks who complete their geshe studies would continue here or at the smaller Gyume monastery in order to receive a firm grounding in vajrayana practice. Both these monasteries used to be in Lhasa, Tibet, but they were re-established in India. The monks of the Gyuto Order are known for their tradition of overtone singing, which achieved renown in the West following the release of recordings made by David Lewiston in 1978, and in 1990 by Windham Hill Records.
