Hello, Dolly! Biography
Hello, Dolly! is a musical with lyrics and music by Jerry Herman and a book by Michael Stewart, based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 farce The Merchant of Yonkers, which Wilder revised and retitled The Matchmaker in 1955. Hello, Dolly! was first produced on Broadway by David Merrick in 1964, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and nine other Tonys. It has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits, enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success. Hello, Dolly! was also made into a musical film in 1969. Gene Kelly directed producer Ernest Lehman's screenplay. The cast included Barbra Streisand, Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, Tommy Tune, Fritz Feld, and Louis Armstrong, whose recording of the title tune was a #1 hit in the mid-1960s. It was photographed in 70 mm Todd-AO by Harry Stradling Sr.. Streisand got her revenge for losing the Tony Award to Carol Channing, who originated the role, when she was cast as Dolly in the film.
