Ladyhawke Biography
Phillipa 'Pip' Brown (born in 1982, Masterton, Wairarapa, New Zealand), better known by her stage name Ladyhawke, is a solo singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, playing all the instruments in studio and touring with a band. Her musical style blends new wave, indie rock and electropop. Born with Asperger's Syndrome, Pip was a music-obsessed child with very musical parents (step-father a drummer, mother a singer). She is noted as being influenced by 70s and 80s music. While attending Chanel College, she played in several grunge bands. Ladyhawke was formerly a member of the rock band Two Lane Blacktop from New Zealand, and the Sydney duo Teenager with Nick Littlemore of Pnau. After two years (2005), Brown decided to leave Teenager to focus on a personal project she had been developing for sometime, a persona she had dubbed "Ladyhawke", inspired by the Richard Donner film from 1985 with the same name. Her debut album Ladyhawke was released on Modular in September 2008 and gained mostly positive reviews. The album peaked at #16 at UK Albums Chart, #16 Australian Albums Chart, #41 at U.S. Billboard Top Heatseekers, #62 at European Top 100 Albums, #1 at New Zealand Albums Chart. Five singles were released from this album: "Back Of The Van", "Paris Is Burning", "Dusk Till Dawn", "My Delirium" and "Magic". She also collaborated with Pnau on Embrace, one of their most known songs. Currently Ladyhawke is writing material for a second album. Awards: Ladyhawke was nominated for Best Solo Artist at NME Awards 2009, Best Kiwi & Independent Spirit at MTV Australia Awards and for International Female Solo Artist at Brit Awards 2010. She won five awards (Album of the Year, Best Dance/Electronica album, Single of the Year - My Delirium, International Achievement Award, Best Female Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the Year) and was nominated for People's Choice Award at New Zealand Music Awards. Pip was nominated for six categories on ARIA Music Awards 2009 and won two of them: Breakthrough Artist – album for Ladyhawke and Breakthrough Artist – single for "My Delirium". Her debut album ranked #23 on MusicOMH Best Albums of 2008.
