Mumzy Stranger Biography
Mumzy was born and raised in Plaistow, East London, he is of Bangladeshi origin, raised in a traditional Bengali Islamic home. He is the second youngest of the six in his family. He started to be interested in music at the age of 11. He was influenced by music by his brothers' music collections. His development of his music however was not supported by much of his family and developed it secretly, but did have support from his mother. His music roots are from the underground sounds of UK garage. During his years in secondary school and college, he started experimenting with various MC styles, singing in college which he then discovered the range of vocals. He has been a solo singer and created his own studio at his home. In 2007, he studied Business Information Technology, and achieved a BA Honours at the University of Westminster. In 2005, a friend sent over a demo tape to the BBC Asian Network and somehow found itself being shortlisted for the finals at the BBC Asian Network ‘Unsung’ competition, dedicated to unsigned talent. He missed out on a win but his consolation prize was meeting Rishi Rich who saw huge potential in him. Mumzy later learnt that it was Rishi that fished his demo out of the competition basket. It was this encounter that paved the way forward for the young vocalist. He signed Mumzy to his then Rishi Rich Productions and later with the establishment of Tiffin Beats Records and independent record label owned and managed by Rishi Rich. Working with Rishi Rich and other artists, he has recorded many songs such as "Stranger", which is currently used as his motto, you're born a stranger, you live a stranger, and you die a stranger. Mumzy recorded more songs including "Know You Wanna Dance" and "We Gotto Get Goin" and performed them at the Royal Festival Hall in Southbank, London, at the UK Asian Music Awards in 2008. The event was organised by the BBC Asian Network, which has promoted Mumzy on the BBC and at mela's and festivals since 2007. Including "Runaway" and debut-single "One More Dance", both which were performed during the Baishakhi Mela in Bethnal Green in London. His debut single "One More Dance" is produced by Rishi Rich, and is set for release on 20 July, 2009. It’s hard to imagine how things would have turned out if Mumzy’s demo hadn’t made it to the BBC. He’s at the beginning of his career – he’s edgy, creative and raw and he’s definitely no stranger.
