Robert Todd Harrell, 41, bassist for rockers 3 Doors Down, was charged with vehicular homicide after a fatal crash in Nashville on Friday night.
According to Reuters, Harrell was driving his Cadillac CTS at a high rate of speed on the interstate when he clipped the bumper of a pickup truck, sending it swerving out of control and down an embankment, where it flipped over. The driver, 47-year-old Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., was killed after being ejected from his truck.
Police said Harrell showed signs of impairment at the scene and admitted to drinking some hard cider earlier and taking the prescription painkiller Lortab and anxiety drug Xanax. He was transported to Nashville's Metro Jail and was later also accused of bringing controlled substances into the jail when deputies found a plastic baggie hidden in his sock with eight additional Xanax pills, 24 Oxycodone pills and four Oxymorphone pills.
Harrell is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond and was reportedly still in jail at press time. A spokesperson for the Davidson County Sheriff's office could not be reached for comment on Harrell's bond status as of Monday morning (April 22).
The group issued a statement expressing their condolences. "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders, Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time."
Harrell was arrested on a DUI charge in July after failing to stop at an intersection and colliding with a pickup truck in southern Mississippi.
