Sandler, 45, who plays both lead roles of twins Jack and Jill in the film, recently appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman.
He revealed that he asked Cruise's permission for Holmes, 32, to be his on-screen wife and Cruise said to him: 'This is weird that my wife is going to be your wife.'
Sandler then told Letterman what he said to him.
He said: 'It's a PG movie, no worries, nothing is going to happen. In fact, anything I do with your wife in the movie, you can do with my wife.
'So every morning I'd go to the set and hear, 'please do a love scene. Please slowly take your shirt off in that scene and rub her ever so tenderly'.'
