Against Me!'s Laura Grace Jones has criticized Arcade Fire's 'We Exist' video for not featuring a real transgender actor.
Last week saw the release of the latest video from Reflektor, a piece that shows Andrew Garfield struggling with gender issues. It sees the Spiderman actor wandering around in a wig, hitting bars, dancing and eventually attending goin to see Win Butler and his merry men at a concert in a wedding dress.
Laura Grace Jones, who has struggled with gender dysphoria, has hence called out the band for not being more sensitive to the issue, by casting a trans actor in the part. Obviously the draw of having Spiderman in a music video was just too much for the band.
Dear @arcadefire , maybe when making a video for a song called "We Exist" you should get an actual "Trans" actor instead of Spider-Man?
Despite this, the video has managed to raise some awareness for the issue with @katdarcy83 writing on twitter: "I totally related to the character/situation in that video (minus the dance sequence) but seriously, diversity is key." Whether or not the subject was handled sensitively will largely be down to you perspective."
Meanwhile, Arcade Fire will be headlining the Pyramid Stage on the opening Friday of this year's Glastonbury Festival, and Reflektor stars will be returning to the UK and Ireland this year for a string of live headline shows Dates are below.
