Amy Lee says the darker elements character are 'exaggerated', when really she is just a 'girl next door'.
The singer-songwriter is the frontwoman of American rock group Evanescence.
The band rose to prominence with debut album Fallen in 2003.
Amy can appreciate why people assume she is moody and reserved because of the nature of the record's lyrics and her gothic appearance. However, the songstress insists she is nothing like that in real life.
Amy says she was just so shy in the initial stages of the band's success, it was interpreted the wrong way.
' do remember our first Kerrang! feature ' I was just insecure. I was 21, I'd gone right from high school, did one semester of college then I got a record deal. Bam! Bam! Bam! It was all so fast. I was so happy about what was happening to us career-wise, but there was a lot of internal turmoil ' there was a lot to protect at that time,' she explained in an interview with Kerrang! magazine.
'n our early days I was more one-sided, a little bit more of a character. It was me, but an exaggerated dark version. I'm really just a girl next door ' I want to talk about you as much as I want to talk about me.'
Amy insists she is no different to the people who listen to her music.
The 29-year-old star wants audiences to start realising the real her.
'More and more I want to portray my whole self, rather than just a part of it. I make music, people like it. Other than that, we're totally on the same level,' she revealed.
' think that's really important to bear in mind for my sanity.'
