The British tabloid media has kicked their Amy Winehouse coverage into high gear, with new reports that the late singer secretly become engaged just weeks before her death, as well as a report that she bought crack cocaine and heroin her last night alive.
A source tells The Sun that film director Reg Traviss proposed to Winehouse after two years together and they planned to marry next year. It was the stability of being with Traviss, the source claims, that drove Winehouse to want to stay clean.
Amy Winehouse Adoption Claim 'Not True,' Rep Says
"Amy spent a week in rehab in June and told loved ones afterwards she was determined to quit booze," the unnamed Sun source says. "She was planning her future with Reg and that was playing a huge part in her thinking. Amy was adamant about sorting herself out. Reg's proposal made her even more determined.
It wouldn't be far-fetched for the pair to have been engaged given comments made by Winehouse's father, Mitch, at her funeral.
"He helped her with her problems and Amy was looking forward to their future together," he said. "She was the happiest she has been for years."
Mitch Winehouse, 60, made a plea to the British government on Monday (Aug. 1) to help fund rehab programs for teenagers who cannot afford treatment. He proposed naming a treatment center after his daughter.
Amy Takes Over U.K. Charts Amid Grief
Meanwhile, The Daily Mirror spoke to a man who claims to have helped Winehouse find drugs the Friday before her death. Tony Azzopardi -- described as a "fixer" who can set people up with dealers -- tells the tabloid that Winehouse approached him near a pub called The Eagle lat Friday and sought his help.
Azzopardi claims he called a known dealer who soon arrived with an ounce of crack and heroin. He says she paid £1,200 (US$1,953) for both.
"She looked good, you know, fit -- like she'd been clean for a while and filled out a bit," Azzopardi says. "I couldn't believe it when I found out she was gone."
Azzopardi is scheduled to speak with the police on Tuesday to give his account.
The Winehouse family doesn't believe any of this account, however. Dad Mitch believes she was home the night before she died and an unnamed family source told The Sun last week that the family is convinced she died because her body couldn't handle the shock of quitting drugs and alcohol so quickly.
The actual cause of Winehouse's death won't be known for weeks when toxicology tests are returned.
