The event's executive producer Amy Doyle said: 'Britney will be at the show and we'll be paying tribute to her.
'She was having an incredible year and she is so beloved by the MTV audience that we started to think what could we do that would be a different experience.'
The producers of the show are also discussing an acknowledgement to Winehouse, whose death shocked the industry last month.
Doyle added to Billboard.com: 'We had a great history with Amy. She was very near and dear to us.'
MTV recently announced that stars such as Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian and Seth Rogen will all present at the show, while Adele and Chris Brown will perform at the event.
The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards are set to be televised in the US live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on August 28.
