Before "Saturday Night Live" alum Andy Samberg took the stage for his hosting duties at Saturday night's (February 23) Independent Spirit Awards — which traditionally take place one day before the Oscars — he stopped on the red carpet to talk with MTV News' Josh Horowitz about the gig.
This, of course, wasn't Samberg's first venture into the realm of awards-show MCs. Back in 2009, he hosted the MTV Movie Awards, but unfortunately, as he told Horowitz, the jokes he used for that hosting job might not hold up this time around.
"Yep, exact same jokes. They aged well. They're like a fine wine," Samberg quipped. "I figure why switch it up? I've got it locked. A whole bunch of jokes about — I don't know — Flo Rida? Who was there that year for MTV? A bunch of musicians probably."
After Samberg's interview with MTV News, he found plenty of material from people in the audience, current events and this awards season to mine monologue jokes from. The comedian riffed on South African track sensation and recent murder suspect Oscar Pistorius ("I think he's going to walk"), Anne Hathaway and "The Sessions" star John Hawkes ("I want to see your 'Winter's Bone' ").
But Samberg is just one of two men with important hosting gigs this weekend. When asked if he's been spending time with Oscars host Seth MacFarlane at a host-only bar, Samberg joked, "Yeah, me, MacFarlane, and Leno's there," he said. "It's pretty mellow, a lot of like comparing monologue jokes."
