Arcade Fire have said that they hear elements of Arcade Fire's earlier tracks in "crappy pop songs".
Brothers Will and Win Butler spoke to Q magazine about the nature of music, with Win saying that musicians and their sound are always bound to overlap. Will however, pointed out that he heard elements of Arcade Fire songs from years ago in the current charts.
"We're all taking from the same well. I mean, we all love The Clash. And The Clash was just taking Elvis," Win Butler told Q magazine. "Music is imitation. That's the core of what music is. And the artistry is making it your own and making it seamless, even though it's coming from a million different sources."
"There's a couple of hits now that are shadows of Arcade Fire songs," added younger brother Will. "You're just like, 'Oh?!' Cos we're not... I mean we're big, we sell records, we can play Hyde Park. But we've never had a hit song."
"Now there's crappy pop hits that you hear, some elements of which you're like, 'Oh that came from Funeral, ten years ago, and now it's in shitty pop songs.' Which is kind of, from a musicological perspective, really fascinating to see".
The band are currently wrapping up their Reflektor tour in the US before heading into the studio to start work on their next album.
