Austin Mahone finds comparisons between him and Justin Bieber "obnoxious".
The 18-year-old singer is considered similar to the Baby musician, having both made a name for themselves on YouTube before being propelled into the limelight.
However, Austin no longer finds the comments complimentary and is keen to move away from the association.
Justin has been making headlines for the wrong reasons lately, most recently causing controversy after footage of him using the N-word in two videos was made public.
"I can kind of see where they're coming from, but at the same time, it's kind of obnoxious," Austin told Associated Press of the comparisons. "They see a young kid who sings and dances and... they're like, 'Oh another Justin Bieber.' Like, you don't even know. You don't know me. You don't know my music. You're just making assumptions."
While Austin may not yet have the same level of success as Justin, his stardom is growing rapidly. His debut EP The Secret reached the No.5 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart after its release this week.
The heartthrob is looking forward to growing as an artist and insists his talent will only increase from here on out.
"I may not be the best dancer or the best performer right now, but I'm always getting better," he added. "Next year I'll be even better than I am now. And the year after that, I'll just keep getting better."
Austin recently recalled his job at a bowling alley before he became famous. He grew up in San Antonio, Texas, with his mother Michelle after his father died when he was just a year and a half old.
"I had a job setting up bowling pins," he recalled on Chelsea Lately. "[It could get] pretty dangerous.
"It was child slavery. It was horrible."
