Could the Beach Boys' Smile Finally See a Release?
One of the holy grails of rock music may finally see an official release. In a recent interview, Beach Boy Al Jardine mentioned that the album Smile will see the light of day this summer.
Capitol Records plans to issue a Beach Boys version of Smile sometime this summer to begin the celebration of The Beach Boys' anniversary. is the Holy Grail for Beach Boys' fans, so it will be good.
I don't have many details on it, although we didn't do any new recording. I'm happy to see it finally come out. Brian's changed his mind about releasing the material, but it was inevitable, wasn't it?.
Wilson did release his own version of the music from the album a couple of years ago and a number of the songs have been released or leaked out over the years (Good Vibrations, Heroes & Villains, Surf's Up), but this would be the first time that the album, as originally conceived by Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks, would make it to the public.
What isn't known is the format the release will take. Will it be a single-CD of the album as originally conceived, a two-CD set with rarities or a major box set with outtakes and other material? We'll find out more as we get closer to the time of the (hopeful) release.
