It's hard to believe, but Bette Midler has never performed at the Oscars.
The singer/actress has been nominated twice, for The Rose (1979) and For the Boys (1991); however, none of her best known songs from motion pictures such as The Rose and Wind Beneath My Wings (from Beaches) were nominated for Best Original Song, so she has never been asked to perform.
Oscars producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said "We are thrilled to have Bette perform on the Oscars for the very first time. We believe she will make our Oscar telecast an especially moving evening."
There is no word about what she will perform or how it will be used. Last year, Shirley Bassey wowed the audience with a version of her classic Goldfinger during a salute to the James Bond film series. It is also possible, based on the "moving experience" comment, that she will sing during the in memoriam section of the show.
