A new month brings a brand spanking new Controller for Topman CTRL in the shape of dance pop trio, Chew Lips, who take to the throne for the whole of April - nabbing the crown from March's Bombay Bicycle Club. The band are also set to take their electronic casiotone beats to Cardiff Arts Institute on 16th April as a part of Topman CTRL Live, with support from Party Horse, Ten Bears and DJ Dan Strange.
With the title of Topman Controllers comes the responsibility of heading up Topman CTRL online, www.topmanctrl.com. On the site, Chew Lips' vocalist Tigs and instrumentalists Will and James will open the door to what makes them tick, revealing their influences, insider knowledge - even divulging their favourite books, movies, faces and places.
All this and more will feature at www.topmanctrl.com, the brand new online destination where visitors can keep up to date with all that's going on in the world of Chew Lips and Topman CTRL.
The London based trio have fast established themselves as a band with brilliantly contrary characteristics - with their minimal beats on debut album Unicorn, showcasing pop music with a complex and colourful DNA. The BBC said of the album, "Unicorn is that rarest of things: a record imbued with genuine talent and emotion which wipes the floor with the majority of its makers' contemporaries...quite startling." After spending the whole of 2009 in a whirl of hype, Chew Lips are claiming their place as bona fide pop stars this year.
Following the release of their single 'Karen', the band have become firm favourites with new music authorities including Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Nick Grimshaw, Kissy Sellout and Huw Stephens. Their indelible melodies with the smart mouthed vocals of Tigs – described by NME as a cross between Karen O and Florence Welch – have resulted in the band being top of the 'ones to watch' list.
Tigs said: "We're really looking forward to hand picking bands, playing with people we respect and we always love playing in Cardiff."
Anglo-Dutch, boy-girl duo Party Horse are also set to take to The Cardiff Arts Institute stage. Having previously supported Chew Lips, DK and Ursula bring their electro-skewed party pop, fizzing synths and throbbing drum machines to Topman CTRL Live.
Chew Lips have also chosen Manchester's psych-pop band Ten Bears. The band perform ahead of the release of their debut single 'Braces' on 19th April. Bursting onto the new music radar, the band took their futurist-guitar pop to the stage of Glastonbury last summer and have also just played dates at SXSW.
