Joanie Faircloth, who accused Brights Eyes' Conor Oberst of raping her, has issued a statement admitting that she was lying all along.
In the public apology offered, she went back on everything that she had done, saying sorry both to Oberst and to real victims of sexual abuse.
The allegations she originally posted were in an anonymous thread on XOJane.com started back in December. In it she claimed they met 10 years ago and Oberst responded with a $1 million defamation lawsuit in February.
As a result we have the following apology:
“The statements I made and repeated online and elsewhere over the past six months accusing Conor Oberst of raping me are 100% false. I made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life and trying to cope with my son’s illness. I publicly retract my statements about Conor Oberst, and sincerely apologize to him, his family, and his fans for writing such awful things about him. I realize that my actions were wrong and could undermine the claims of actual sexual assault victims and for that I also apologize. I’m truly sorry for all the pain that I caused.”
It was previously reported by other publications that sales of Oberst's last album were directly affected by the accusations, along with speculation that he had been dropped by his label. Safe to say that both were also false.
