Released through Rice's own label Heffa and licensed to 14th Floor Records, 9 demonstrates the vast and diverse creative talent of Rice, who wrote, recorded and produced the record, as well as designing all of its artwork. 'A creative triumph' declared Q Magazine. The Sunday Times awarded it 'Record Of The Week', while the Daily Telegraph wrote, 'Extraordinary, beautiful and brutal'. The Evening Standard proclaimed, '9 is a genuine five star classic'.
Born in Dublin, Rice first achieved international success with the release of his debut album O in 2002. It spent over 80 weeks in the UK Top 75 Album Chart, and sold over 2 million copies worldwide, including 1 million in the UK. The album includes the hit singles Cannonball and The Blower's Daughter, the lead track in the Oscar-nominated film Closer. In 2004, Rice was nominated for both a BRIT Award and an NME Award, whilst in the US; Rice became the first UK-signed artist ever to be awarded the prestigious Shortlist Music Prize. In 2005, Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan released the single Unplayed Piano in support of the Free Aung San Suu Kyi 60th Birthday Campaign, a global initiative to free the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
