The 24-year-old actor said on US talk show Live With Regis And Kelly that he had always had long curly hair, but decided to cut it all off for his third attempt at getting a part in the high-school comedy series.
Criss, who plays preppy private schoolboy Blaine Anderson, showed the show’s hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa a photo of himself taken the day before his Glee audition.
'This is what I really look like, I have big hair, that is who I really am, this is all a lie,' he told them.
'The day before my audition for Blaine, who is a real clean-cut and Tom Ford-ish preppy guy, I cut my hair because I thought it could really make a change.
'People in Hollywood are very face value, I was the kid with the long hair and I was desperate to see how it would go.”
He added: 'I would never admit that I cut my hair for an audition, though.
'But I would never have got it if I [hadn’t] cut my hair. It was being in the right place at the right time.'
