Dave Davies, founder member of British Rock institution The Kinks, has suffered a stroke.
Dave took ill on Wednesday June 30th, 2004, during a day of radio promotional interviews for his new solo album, 'Bug'. Two interviews were completed, with the Danny Baker Show for BBC Radio London and the Phill Jupitus Show on the BBC's digital network 6 Music. After the second interview, Dave took ill and had to be rushed to hospital to receive emergency treatment. At the time of writing, he is still convalescing in hospital, and is making steady progress. It is felt that in time, Dave will make a full return to good health.
Dave's illness came at a time when his career was at a very positive point; his new album was due to be released on July 12th, and he had played several solo concerts in Europe, and was due to perform further shows in the USA in August, before returning to the UK for further live work later in the year (Dave has toured the USA successfully on a regular basis since 1997). He had recently completed a lengthy interview with Uncut magazine for a massive Kinks cover feature, around the reissue of their classic album from 1968, 'The Village Green Preservation Society'. Furthermore, this month - August 2004 - marks the fortieth anniversary of the bands' first number one hit single, 'You Really Got Me', in which Dave's trademark distorted guitar sound was first heard in full effect, a sound that has gone on to influence successive generations of musicians.
'Bug' was released on the Angel Air record label on Monday, July 12th.
'The Village Green Preservation Society' was reissued as a triple CD set on the Castle Music label on Monday, June 28th.
