EAST 17, one of the most celebrated and successful boy bands of all time, have finally re-united under the auspices of principal songwriter Tony Mortimer. The band achieved 18 Top Twenty hits (including House Of Love, Deep and Christmas No.1 Stay Another Day) as well as four Top Ten albums and sales of over twenty million records and Mortimer himself received an Ivor Novello Songwriter Award for Stay .. a song he wrote for his brother Ollie who committed suicide. Manager Albert Samuels confirmed this week that the band has signed to FOD Records and that they plan to release a new album before the end of the year.
EAST 17 made two brief returns to the pop firmament in late 1998 and in 2006: the former was notable for Mortimer's lack of involvement and the latter made headlines after the band's then lead-singer Brian Harvey and Mortimer were involved in a fracas not unconnected to a one-off comeback concert that occurred at Shepherds Bush Empire on May 30th that year. Mortimer, who recruited Harvey as a front-man after he noticed his rehearsal performances as back-up singer and dancer, has settled on an extraordinarily-talented and charismatic new vocalist Blair Dreelan for the band's current reincarnation. The full line-up now includes original members Tony Mortimer, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell along with Dreelan and a new single entitled Secret Of My Life is set for release on FOD Records in mid-July.
In recent weeks T-Mobile have used the East 17 song House Of Love in a Royal Wedding spoof commercial and at the last count this had generated an astonishing twenty one million You Tube hits.
