The 50-year-old is hosting the 84th Academy Awards next year and talked about the presenting gig during an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.
Asked why he's presenting the awards, he said: 'I haven't done it, I want to do some things that I haven't done.'
Letterman, who hosted the awards himself in 1995, added: 'It ain't all it's cracked up to be.'
Murphy laughed and said: 'I'm not dreading it, I'm kind of looking forward to it.'
Asked if he has anything planned for the show, he said: 'No I'm not going to do any singing and dancing. That was the one thing... one of the first things that came out of my mouth 'I'm not doing any crazy dance numbers'.
He then joked and sung: 'We're at the Oscars tonight. You're at the Academy Awards.'
Letterman said he was 'tremendous' in the movie Dreamgirls and Murphy said: 'I should come out and do a big Dreamgirls number, come out and do a split and just frighten them.'
