The Union, a documentary on Elton John and Leon Russell's recent collaboration, will open the 10th Tribeca Film Festival in New York on April 20.
Directed by Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything...), the film looks at the writing and recording of the album The Union and includes appearances by producer T Bone Burnett, Bernie Taupin, Stevie Nicks, Neil Young, Booker T. Jones, Brian Wilson and Don Was.
Crowe said "As a longtime fan of both artists, it was a pleasure to spend a year filming their collaboration. We can't wait to show it to one of the greatest audiences in the world, the Tribeca Film Festival."
After the premier, Elton will put on a special concert. Jane Rosenthal, who was a co-founder of Tribeca Enterprises with Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff, said "It's a special opportunity to open our 10th Festival in this distinct and unique way-not only are we inviting the community to join us for the world premiere of Cameron Crowe's film The Union, but to have Elton, whose music transcends generations, perform after is an extraordinary gift to our Festival and more specifically the downtown community. Cameron Crowe gives audiences unprecedented access into Elton John and Leon Russell's artistic process in an emotional and realistic way."
Also be watching for Elton to host the April 2 edition of Saturday Night Live. He will also be musical guest with Russell. It's Elton's first appearance on the show since 1982.
