During a 90-minute performance at a benefit for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, at the home of billionaire Ron Burkle, Sir Elton had the audience cheering, between songs, with his rallying comments in support of same sex relationships.
The Candle In The Wind singer, 63, said: "I think I have it all. I have a wonderful career, a wonderful life. I have my health, I have a partner of 17 years and now I have a son.”
He added: "I don't have everything because I don't have the respect of people like the church or like politicians who tell me that I'm not worthy, that I'm lesser because I'm gay, well f*** you!"
The event raised more than £1.9m to help fund the fight to overturn California's Proposition 8, which states that, “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognised in California”.
