Sir Elton John has called Dame Elizabeth Taylor 'a Hollywood giant' following her passing last night in Los Angeles.
In a statement Sir Elton said, 'We have lost a Hollywood giant. More importantly, we have lost an incredible human being.'
Dame Elizabeth died at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in West Hollywood surrounded by her four children.
Most likely Hollywood will never see a star of her calibre ever again. She was the first superstar and the last of the golden era Hollywood legends.
But while Dame Elizabeth will be remembered as one of the greatest Hollywood stars of all-time, she will also be known as a great humanitarian. Elizabeth Taylor fought for AIDS research and awareness and rallied the government fund more research. In 1993, she was given a special Academy Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her work. France awarded her The Legion of Honor, the French equivalent of a knighthood for her AIDS work.
Queen Elizabeth II made her a Dame in 2000 (the female equivalent of a Knight) for her charity work and services to the entertainment industry.
A private funeral is planned for later this week.
