Sir Elton John reportedly bought his new home to make room for a second child.
The star and his partner David Furnish already have one son, Zachary, who was born via a surrogate.
The couple apparently splashed out on a new mansion in Los Angeles in preparation for providing 20-month-old Zachary with a sibling.
"Elton wanted to get a place bought and in shape before having a second child," a source told British newspaper The Sun.
Elton and David spent £4.8 million on the lavish property and sources say the family may move in as early as Christmas.
Builders have already been sent in to start work on a nursery and music studio.
Elton and David sold their high rise Hollywood condo in September.
The pair had their son in mind when making the sale.
"They did love the home, but now they are parents they have to think more sensibly and it wasn't ideal for Zachary," a source revealed at the time.
"The apartment was situated halfway up the Sierra Towers complex, so it was dangerously high up."
