Five years after the release of their last album, Evanescence returned to debut their new single, "What You Want," with a live performance on MTV on Monday night (Aug. 8). The song, which was released to iTunes today, previews the rock group's self-titled third album, due out Oct. 11.

The hard-charging single finds singer Amy Lee trying to convince a romantic partner to stop "spiraling down, down, down" and help her find a new beginning. "Hello, hello, remember me? I'm everything you can't control/Somewhere beyond the pain, there must be a way to believe," she sings over crashing cymbals and a steady guitar line.
Recorded in Nashville with producer Nick Raskulinecz, "Evanescence" follows previous albums "Fallen" and "The Open Door" -- which spawned hit singles like "Bring Me to Life," "Going Under" and "Call Me When You're Sober" -- as well as multiple lineup changes that stalled the band's recording process. In a post-performance interview, Lee says that pegging "What You Want" as the disc's first single was "a really natural choice. It's kind of about coming back in some ways: it's about the fans, it's about this Evanescence renaissance that we're having, and I think it makes sense."
