Fall Out Boy 'Came To Win' Against Smashing Pumpkins In March Madness

We're deep into the second round of MTV's Musical March Madness tournament, and, with elimination looming for so many bands, the pressure is starting to rise, and the gloves are coming off.

We've already seen Paramore take shots at defending MMM champs Tokio Hotel, and upset-minded underdogs Tegan and Sara put Green Day on notice. And now, we're witnessing temperatures rise in the second-round tilt between Windy City rivals Fall Out Boy and Smashing Pumpkins.

We're not going to lie: when the 2013 MMM bracket was revealed, we were salivating at the potential second-round battle between FOB and the Pumpkins, the two bands that carried the mantle for Chicago over the past two decades. And after Fall Out Boy ripped Of Monsters And Men, and Corgan and Co. dealt with Gotye in round one, well, our wishes were fulfilled.

So now, with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line, Fall Out Boy are letting it be known that, though they respect the Pumpkins, Chicago is their town, and Billy Corgan should go back to hawking furniture.

"[This matchup] makes me think of Drederick Tatum on 'The Simpsons:' 'I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children,'" FOB frontman Patrick Stump told. "Kidding. Billy is a legend and we have a lot of mutual friends. Still ... we came to win."

That's the kind of tough talk Fall Out Boy brought into the 2013 tournament, and they're not about to back down in the face of a local legend. But perhaps realizing there's still plenty of time left in the second round — voting closes on Monday, April 1 at noon ET — Stump struck a conciliatory tone in closing. After all, he knows better than to underestimate the Pumpkins' power.

"May the best man win," he said. "And may that not be dictated by height."
