The government is backing a new task force, called the Live Music Forum, in order to support live music at grass roots level. The initiative heralded by Arts minister Estelle Morris will be headed by former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey. An extensive survey of the state of live music will be carried out now that the Licensing Act has dropped an antiquated ruling that allowed only solo's or duet's to perform without the venue having a license. Pubs, cafes and clubs will now have to apply for an entertainment license
Sharkey said: "I am delighted to have been asked to play a part in this unique initiative, one which we hope will help develop, encourage and promote live music."
The survey will probe the current state of the live music scene at grass roots level and aim to uncover why some areas thrive and others fail.
Arts Minister, Morris said: "A vibrant live music scene is a vital element of our cultural life."
She said she wanted to ensure the Licensing Act "expands those opportunities".
This is a much needed initiative into the foundations of the music scene. For fifty years, the UK has provided the world with a wealth of musical talent of all styles, not to mention the revenue that it has brought in. Tomorrow's musicians at all levels need to have somewhere to learn their skills today. Its about time live music and it's players were given the respect they deserve.
