The last time we saw Richard Madden as Robb Stark on "Game of Thrones," he was in a very happy place, basking in the glow of his secret, surprise nuptials. It was a nice change to see a happy Stark for once, but as we all know by now in watching this complicated series, and especially from reading George R. R. Martin's brilliant books, no one stays happy for very long.
MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with Madden during the cast's visit to San Diego Comic-Con, where we plied him with questions about how much he knows about his character's dramatic arc in season three and exactly how short-lived his wedded bliss will be.
"I've read six [episodes]; I can't wait to read the last four," Madden said when asked how many scripts he's read and received. "It's much more complicated. Season one, [Robb] was pushed and pulled and he was reacting to situations. Season two, he was driving the action. And then season three, we're going to go into him having to deal with decisions he's made and decisions that he makes during the season this year, story lines that affect tens of thousands of people that are his army and his men," Madden explained. "There's some really complicated but amazing stuff that happens. I wish I could tell you more, I really do, but the HBO snipers would take me out."
We don't want Madden to be taken out by snipers, despite the fact that in having read the books, we are very much aware of what "complicated but amazing stuff" happens to Robb next season. The last time we checked in with the charming Scottish actor, he had yet to start reading "Storm of Swords," Martin's third book in the series, which will serve as the basic plot for the third season. When we asked him for a progress update this time around, Madden revealed that he's finally diving into the material, but hasn't finished yet.
"I'm on it now," he said. "I'm on par with the script."
Fingers crossed we can touch base with Madden again for his commentary after he hits the halfway mark or the ending of "Storm of Swords."
