Gloria Estefan joins the growing number of artists recording music from the great American songbook with The Standards, out September 10 on Sony Masterworks.
Unlike those other projects, Estefan has taken her set to the next level, recording songs in five different languages, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French with some of the translations done by Estefan herself.
Gloria says that this has been a pet project for awhile but that she needed to reach a point in life where she truly understood the lyrics. "There are so many torch songs requiring life experience to deliver them with proper credibility.
"I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra , Johnny Mathis , Henry Mancini and great romance recording artists in Mexico and Cuba. This genre is right up my alley, since music is always a catharsis to me."
Recording the standards finally came into focus during a trustee dinner at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music where Shelly Berg, producer for such artists as Patti Austin and Arturo Sandoval, serves as dean. "We sat at the piano just for fun and he asked me to sing a song I performed 30 years ago during our first appearance on the Carson Show." The impromptu session eventually led to Gloria singing Good Morning Heartache, now the lead song on the album.
