One day after Harry Styles was pelted in the groin with a shoe by an overzealous fan, he won an award from British music publication NME. But it probably won't serve as much of a consolation prize.
While Florence Welch, the Killers and even President Barack Obama nabbed more honorable wins at the 2013 NME Awards, One Direction's floppy-haired heartthrob ended up with the Villain of the Year award. As if that wasn't enough, 1D also took home the award for Worst Band during the fan-voted show.
But even though he wasn't at the London ceremony — the guys were onstage in Glasgow, Scotland, for their Take Me Home tour — he took to Twitter Wednesday night to "thank" everyone for the honor.
"And thank you to @NME for my award tonight," Styles wrote. "Gotta take the rough with the smooth eh?"
So, who did Styles manage to beat? U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron (who appears in 1D's "One Way or Another" video), Skrillex, Psy, Fred Macpherson and Azealia Banks. In the worst band category, 1D beat out Muse, Mumford & Sons, Alt-J, Justin Bieber and 1D pal Ed Sheeran.
After a couple back to back shows in Glasgow, One Direction will take Thursday night off before heading to Wales. The group will play shows in Europe and Mexico through June, when the tour will circle around to the States, with the first show taking place in Sunnyside, Florida. While on the road they will also be shooting their Morgan Spurlock-helmed 3-D film, which hits theaters in August.
