US network NBC has officially announced that Stern, 57, will replace departing talk show host Piers Morgan on the panel when the talent show returns for a 7th season in the summer of 2012.
He will join fellow Talent judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne, while Nick Cannon remains host.
TMZ.com is reporting that Stern will be paid $20m to take part in the show.
But asked by the website if this figure was true, Stern replied dryly: 'Would I really work for that little?'
Production of AGT will move from Los Angeles to New York to accommodate Stern's schedule - who will also continue to host his daily radio programme.
NBC alternative programming chief Paul Telegdy said in a statement: 'Howard Stern's larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to America's Got Talent starting this summer.
'He's a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable.'
Morgan announced last month he was quitting the show.
