Idina Menzel: My Xmas album is depressing!

Idina Menzel has joked her festive album will make those who are depressed over Christmas "want to slit their wrists".

The 43-year-old singer's latest record is called Christmas Wishes and was made to celebrate the holiday season. It includes tracks like All I Want For Christmas Is You and What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?, and Idina is well aware it might not be for everyone.

"I suppose if Christmas makes you depressed this album might make you want to slit your wrists," she laughed to British newspaper Metro.

"Christmas can bash you over the head with joy and hopefulness. I've tried to create an album that is hopeful and joyous but which doesn't alienate those of us who might be lonely or depressed around Christmas. It would be inauthentic if I didn't incorporate those people."

Although the Frozen star is looking forward to December 25 this year, it hasn't always been a good time for her. When she was 15, her parents told her they were divorcing on Thanksgiving Day, which is on the fourth Thursday in November in the US.

It made the run-up to the holiday in December difficult and this was compounded when Idina split from her husband Taye Diggs on Thanksgiving last year.

"It really cemented around Christmas - it was a sucky Christmas. But it won't be this year. It's going to be a beautiful Christmas this year," she assured.

Idina and Taye are parents to five-year-old son Walker and she is excited to make this festive season one to remember for the tot. The singer and her little boy will decorate their tree together, but she isn't going to spoil him with lavish gifts. Idina believes kids can't focus if they have too many presents, so plans to just buy a few choice items. However, she laughed she'll probably get "carried away" and forget about the plan.
