After weeks of speculation, the latest footage from "Iron Man 3" confirms that Gwyneth Paltrow's character Pepper Potts will be suiting up alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle. The next installment in Marvel's cinematic saga, the first after "Marvel's the Avengers" destroyed box-office records last summer, finds Tony Stark (Downey Jr.) up against a brand new foe, Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin. This time out, though, there are no Avengers in sight to assemble.
The most prominently featured supporting player in this new trailer is Paltrow's Pepper Potts. After spending two films watching her co-stars suit up and fly into battle, Paltrow finally gets to fly alongside them. The film lands in theaters on May 3, but you can get a glimpse of Pepper in action in this new international TV spot.
"I can't come home yet, but as long as I'm out here, the Mandarin will come looking for you," narrates Tony Stark in the trailer's opening shots, thus stating what could be the central plot of "Iron Man 3." The previous trailers have included Stark's line about protecting the one thing he can't live without: Pepper Potts. Now with this new footage revealed, we can assume that Stark's trek through the snow (also seen in this spot) is part of a nefarious plot to keep him away from those he loves, and make them easy targets for the Mandarin's schemes.
But Stark has thought through every angle and has left a suit of armor for Pepper, one that can be seen attaching itself to her body in the midst of an attack (possibly the epic attack on Stark's futuristic, ocean side mansion seen in previous trailers). Potts is also shown piloting an Iron Man suit and landing on top of Stark in a protective stance, saying "I got you" through a flipped-up face plate.
This development closely follows Pepper's story line in the Marvel Comics series "Invincible Iron Man," wherein Potts took on the hero name Rescue and aided Iron Man on missions.
