Jack White played a surprise and very brief set in London last night.

The White Stripes' star appeared without sister Meg for the concert at The Social, although he was backed by a percussionist.

Jack is scheduled to perform material from the band's new album, "Icky Thump", on European soil for the first time this week, at the Primavera Sound Festival in Spain.

However, his impromptu set, which featured three songs, began with an acoustic take on "Effect And Cause", from the imminent LP.

It was followed by "Sugar Never Tasted So Good", from The White Stripes' self-titled debut LP, before he asked for requests from the audience.

White, backed by Ben Swank, formerly of the Soledad Brothers, then played a cover of "The House Of The Rising Sun" by The Animals.
