Jessica Sanchez is a little busy these days. The season 11 "American Idol" runner-up has been grinding away preparing her major label debut and filming the video for the Ne-Yo-assisted first single, "Tonight."
But when she's not working on her own music, she's tried to tune in to "Idol" to see how the new judges are doing and see which contenders have the best chance of following in her footsteps this season.
"I've been watching 'Idol' as much as I can cause I've been busy trying to focus on the album," she said. "I've been really, really busy and I've been trying to keep up with the shows and the contestants and I'm very, very excited for them ... [I'm] so, very, very excited for the new season. The judges are amazing, love Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey and all them."
Remembering what the pressure-cooker atmosphere was like when she had her run last year, Sanchez said she's looking forward to showing the world what she's learned and how far she's come on her disc, which is due out in the spring.
Though she couldn't break the run last year, Sanchez said she's also hoping that one of the promising female singers this year will be able to hoist the trophy for the ladies of the first time in six seasons.
"Boys have been winning 'American Idol' ... I mean they've been on a winning streak," she said. "I was hoping to break that streak last year. I think that was the only thing that really brought me down. I was like, 'Dang! I couldn't break that streak!' But I hope a girl wins this year, just to give the girls some pride."
From what she's seen so far, Sanchez "all" the women look good to her so far. But if she had to choose one, it would be R&B powerhouse Candice Glover. "That's my girl from last year," she said. "But I hope a girl wins. I'm very excited for them. Yes, girl power!"
