A long list of veteran and modern performers gathered at Austin's ACL Live on Friday night to salute the late Johnny Cash with We Walk the Line: a Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash. The evening was a benefit to raise money for fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
In addition to the artists out front, the night featured a backing band that included such greats as Ian McLagan (Small Faces/Faces), Don Was (Was (Not Was)), Buddy Miller, Kenny Aronoff and Greg Leisz along with host Matthew McConaughey who also took a turn at singing.
While there were a number of solo highlights during the evening, including Lucinda Williams' take on the late-life Cash hit Hurt, it was the duets that brought the crowd to its feet. Late in the show, the two still living Highwaymen, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, took the stage with Jamey Johnson sitting in for Cash and Shooter Jennings for his later-father Waylon Jennings.
