The 30-year-old singer-turned-actor opened up in an interview with US Elle magazine.
Asked what his parents’ relationship had taught him about his own relationships, the Friends With Benefits star, says: “My parents divorced when I was three. I’m humbly and honestly finding out that I have a lot of issues with that…
“But I’m finding more and more that… I’m going to break the chain because that’s what you want to do, break the chain of your parents. But at some point, it’s in your blood and you have a thing that happens and you’re like, ‘Holy s***, my parents did that’.
“And I read something somewhere where the first three years of a child’s life are the most important for the parents and the child’s connection and right around there, as soon as my parents had me, they divorced.”
But the Memphis-born star adds that his childhood view of relationships wasn’t entirely negative.
Although his parents, Lynn and Randy Timberlake, divorced when he was still a toddler, his mother later remarried.
He says: “At the age of five, I did see a man come into my life, my stepfather, and show me the value of stepping in and really being a man and falling in love with a woman, and bearing the responsibility of being a father figure to her son.”
He went on to add: “And, by the way, all of my parents are great.”
