What does Justin Timberlake have in common with Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Obama? Well, Timberlake is about to join the movie star and the first lady on the list of charitable celebrities who have received the Big Help Award. The pop artist/actor will take home the honor this Saturday at the 2011 Kids' Choice Awards, which airs at 8 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon.
Timberlake is being recognized for his work with Shriners Hospitals for Children, which provides healthcare for young people. Timberlake has been involved with the charity since 2008 and hosts a yearly golf-themed benefit, the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, that helps raise funds for the organization.
"I was inspired at a young age by my parents and family to do everything possible to give back to the world around us," Timberlake said in a statement. "And it has become a mission of mine to help kids of all ages understand the importance of getting involved in their communities and local charities and doing their part to preserve the planet. I couldn't be more thankful to Nickelodeon for their recognition."
Timberlake has quite the history with the Kids' Choice Awards. He hosted the show in 2007, and has two blimps to call his own. He won in 2007 for Favorite Male Singer and nearly a decade prior, in 1999, received the Favorite Group trophy along with his 'NSYNC bandmates. He was also the Burp Award champion in both 2003 and 2006.
This year, however, the show is honoring the star for his philanthropic work. "Justin's ability to seamlessly incorporate helping into his life embodies the true spirit of the Big Help," explained Marva Smalls, the executive vice president of public affairs and chief of staff of Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. "In true Big Help fashion, he combined his passion for helping kids with his love of golf and through his annual golf open benefit for Shriners Hospitals for Children, came up with a way for people to have fun while helping kids get medical care."
Jack Black is set to host the Kids' Choice Awards, which will feature a performance from the Black Eyed Peas and an appearance from Britney Spears. This year's nominees include Kristen Stewart, Emma Watson, Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber, who all possibly will make appearances on the show.
