The British glamour model married the mixed martial artist in a surprise ceremony in Las Vegas last February. The pair had only been dating since July 2009, getting together shortly after Katie’s marriage to Peter Andre fell apart.
The star – also known as Jordan – and Alex have been plagued by rumours their marriage was on the rocks in recent months. Until recently they had always insisted their relationship was strong, but following a newspaper report earlier this month Katie admitted their marriage was in “crisis”.
The couple have now decided to call it quits, with Katie confirming their decision in a statement via her publicist, made after Alex was photographed appearing to be teaching Katie's 5-year-old son Junior, to fight in a gym.
“His desire to promote himself caused a change in the dynamic of our relationship and contributed to our alienation. I had hoped that Alex and I could remain friends but I am not sure if that is possible given events since last Sunday. The intervening period has, however, seen a number of false stories appear and photographs of Alex with my son Junior in the gym which it is absolutely clear were posed for,” explained the statement.
“Alex is fully aware that I have sought to remove my children from the public eye now they are of an age to understand and be affected by media coverage of them. I feel incredibly let down that he did this while asking me for more time to discuss our relationship and just hope that the stories circulating that he sold those pictures are not true.”
Speculation about the state of the marriage began last year after Katie failed to fall pregnant. She has eight-year-old Harvey with ex-boyfriend Dwight Yorke and son Junior, five, and daughter Princess Tiaamii , three, with Peter, and had made no secret of her desire to start a family with Alex.
In October, the 32-year-old admitted she had undergone two rounds of IVF in an effort to have a baby with the cage fighter although it was unsuccessful.
