Lauryn Hill has been charged by the United States government with failing to file income taxes.
It is claimed that The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill singer, who is also a five time Grammy Award winner, has not reported income to the federal authorities in over three years.
According to TMZ the Internal Revenue Service estimates that Lauryn earned at least $1.6 million in income during this time period.
Much of the musician's money comes from music and film royalties. Her eight times platinum album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was released in 1998. She also starred in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit opposite Whoopi Goldberg in 1993.
The 37-year-old is mother to six children.
Lauryn recently gave a surprise performance with rapper and longtime collaborator Nas at Hot 97's annual Summer Jam concert in her native New Jersey.
The pair sang Ready or Not, Lost Ones and If I Ruled the World.
Lauryn is due in court to testify on the matter of tax evasion on June 29.
If convicted the singer could face three years in jail and a fine of $300,000.
