Lauryn Hill leaves prison

Lauryn Hill has been released from prison.

The Fugees star was sentenced to three months in jail for failing to pay nearly $1 million in back tax debt in May. She began her sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, in July.

According to TMZ the mother-of-six went home early today after being released from the minimum security facility. As part of her sentence she is expected to complete three months under house arrest.

The 38-year-old singer has marked her release with a new song she penned while inside. It is called Consumerism and attacks the modern way of life, with lyrics about racism, ageism and sexism.

It is a continuance of remarks Lauryn made when she was arrested in 2012 for tax evasion. She took to her Tumblr blog soon after to let fans know how angry she was with the situation.

"Over-commercialisation and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual," she wrote. "I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns!"

The star was accused of failing to file tax returns in 2006, 2006 and 2007, during which she earned around $1.8 million.

Before her sentencing Lauryn claimed she has "withdrawn from society" due to threats made to her family.
