NFT1 (screening/live music) + Roots & Shoots DJs in Benugo Bar
Roots and Shoots is excited to announce a very special Winter edition at BFI Southbank, on Thursday 11 December, 2008, headlined by Lightspeed Champion.
Featuring a screening of Hal Ashby's darkly humorous 1971 cult classic, Harold and Maude, the film will be followed by a unique acoustic performance by the wonderful Lightspeed Champion, aka Dev Hynes, who will play his own versions of the Cat Stevens songs which make up the uplifting soundtrack to Harold and Maude.
Starring Ruth Gordon, Bud Cort and Vivian Pickles, Harold and Maude is an oddball existential black comedy exploring an unlikely relationship between death-obsessed rich boy Harold (Bud Cort), and the lively, eccentric septuagenarian Maude (Ruth Gordon), who he meets at a funeral. As his loveless mother (Vivian Pickles) attempts to marry him off, morbid Harold finds new meaning in life through his liberating encounters with one-of-a-kind Maude.
With a distinct musical score made up of songs by Cat Stevens, Roots and Shoots will present the full feature film, followed by a one-off live acoustic performance on the BFI Southbank's stage of some of the film's stand out songs by Lightspeed Champion, who's debut solo album, Falling off the Lavender Bridge, was released earlier this year by Domino Records to much acclaim. Following the live performance, Roots and Shoots DJs will play in the Benugo Bar until late.
A new regular slot on the BFI's live calendar, Roots and Shoots showcases emerging new musicians and more established artists from a diverse array of genres, tracking cinematic influences and inspirations.
