It's been five years since LL Cool J released a rap album. That's the longest music drought in his 28 year career, so on his upcoming LP Authentic the Queens, New York, rap great called out the big guns and enlisted DJ Premier to help him on production.
"We've always wanted to work together," Preem told "RapFix Live" show host Sway Calloway on Wednesday. "We got together a few years back and we never got to finish anything."
As a producer, Premier is one of the most revered beat makers in hip-hop, and he often spoke in the same breath as Dr. Dre. In addition to laying tracks for his group Gang Starr, Premo has crafted unforgettable beats for the Notorious B.I.G. ("Unbelievable"), Jay-Z ("D'Evils"), Nas ("Nas is Like") and Rakim ("It's Been a Long Time"). Still, as decorated a hip-hop vet as Premier is, he also recognizes LL's stature in the game. "One of the biggest legends in the game that we all respect. One of the hardest rappers and MCs in hip-hop culture," he said, describing L, who has also made significant strides in Hollywood.
A recently leaked Authentic track list has Snoop Dogg, Chuck D, Eddie Van Halen, DJ Z-Trip, Travis Barker and Tom Morello as features hinting toward a pretty diverse sonic ride. For the track that DJ Premier has been tasked to helm, LL only left him with one request. "He said, 'I wanna yell.' That's all he said," Preem shared. "When L wants to yell, you gotta know what to give him."
